Fun run funds support vital community organisation

01 June 2017

Whether you walk, run or jog the 3km or 8km Botanic to Bridge events, every step counts with funds raised from registrations going directly to local schools or the newly announced 2017 major community beneficiary, St Vincent de Pauls Society - Gladstone.

After a difficult selection process of many worthy community organisations, St Vincent de Pauls affectionately known as St Vinnie’s, was chosen as the 2017 Botanic to Bridge community beneficiary.

With the current economic downturn St Vincent de Pauls have seen an influx of community members requiring their services, with 3,300 people supported last year and an expected increase of at least 12% in 2017.

St Vincent de Pauls, President, Peter Dougherty said that the community is struggling to make ends meet.

“Many long term locals are struggling and we are seeing a number of people moving to Gladstone to take advantage of our cheap rent, a lot of these people exhaust their funds moving and need a bit of assistance to establish themselves,” he said.

“At the moment we are experiencing record demands on our services”

One of the most valuable resources St Vincent de Pauls has is its volunteers, and currently the working conditions for these people are substandard.

Funds raised from the Botanic to Bridge will be used to redevelop the warehouse facility by air-conditioning the donations sorting area and improving the overall warehouse facility.

Gladstone Ports Corporation, CEO, Peter O’Sullivan said he was proud to have the event support such a worthy organisation.

“Times are tough and these services are more valuable now than ever before. If we can help alleviate some of the pressures and ensure that these support facilities remain fully operational and available to our community then we will,” he said.

“St Vincent de Pauls provide individuals and families with food, clothing and in some cases accommodation, things many of us take for granted.

“By simply registering to participate in the annual fun run we can help.”

The Botanic to Bridge will be held on Sunday 20 August.

Registrations are now open and people are encouraged to register early to take advantage of our early bird special to save 10% on their registrations.
