Western Basin Dredging and Disposal Project

The Gladstone Ports Corporation (GPC) proposes to undertake dredging associated with the deepening and widening of existing channels and swing basins, and the creation of new channels, swing basins and berth pockets in the Western Basin.

Material dredged during the Western Basin development is proposed to be placed into a reclamation area to the north and immediately adjacent to the existing Fisherman’s Landing reclamation area, which will create a land reserve that will be used to service new port facilities.

The dredging of the Western Basin will occur in stages and the rate of development will be controlled by the demands of industry locating in the Gladstone region and requiring access to port facilities.

The development of Gladstone’s port facilities is considered a key part in the Central Queensland transport chain and an essential component of economic development for the region. Further industrial development in the region will support the growth of local industry, boost employment and build a strong and diversified regional economy.

Consultants GHD have conducted the Environmental Impact Statement (EIS) on behalf of the GPC and the Queensland State government. The EIS explores and assesses potential environmental, cultural, social and economic adverse and beneficial impacts and recommends approaches to manage these impacts. A final decision on the EIS is expected in 2010.

The five week public exhibition period is currently in place and will run from Monday November 16 to Friday December 18.

Submissions from the public are encouraged.

A public information session on the EIS will be held on Thursday December 3 from 12noon -6pm at the Rydges Gladstone Hotel.

Project information and guidance for making submissions to the Coordinator General regarding the EIS are available at:
