WHO OWNS GPC?
GPC is a Company Government Owned Corporation (GOC), constituted under the provision of the Government Owned Corporations Act 1993 (GOC Act). GPC is responsible to the Queensland Treasurer and Minister for Transport, Trade, Employment and Industrial Relations.

WHERE CAN I GET MORE INFORMATION ABOUT THE PORT OF GLADSTONE?
The Gladstone Ports Corporation offers free port tours to locals, tourists and visitors every Tuesday from 10am. Bookings must be made through the Gladstone Information Centre on 4972 4000. Schools and other special interest groups can also book a tour by calling 4976 1627 during office hours.

WHAT IS DWT?
DWT or Dead Weight Tonnes is the total carrying capacity of a vessel including the crew, supplies, fuel, water, and cargo.

WHAT IS A PANAMAX VESSEL?
Panamax vessels generally have a capacity of between 50,000 – 90,000 DWT and have 7 hatches. They get the name Panamax due to their ability to sail through the Panama Canal

WHAT IS A CAPE SIZE VESSEL?
Cape size vessels generally have a capacity over 90,000 DWT and have 9 hatches. They get their name by being able to sail around the Cape of Good Hope and Cape Horn.

WHAT ROLE DOES THE HARBOUR MASTER PLAY?
The Regional Harbour Master is employed by Maritime Safety Queensland and deals with all matters associated with the safe navigation of vessels within the port.

WHY DO WE USE PILOTS?
Duty pilots are employed by the Pilotage Services Division of Maritime Safety Queensland (MSQ). Pilots are transported to the vessel at the Fairway Buoy by helicopter where they then board and navigate the vessel through the channels safely and berth the vessel alongside the wharf.

WHAT ROLE DO TUGS PLAY IN SHIPPING OPERATIONS?
Tugs assist vessels in both berthing and sailing manoeuvres. The Port of Gladstone uses 5 tugs which are owned and operated by Svitzer and licenced to GPC.
